This is the Chief of the Sialoi Clan. The leader of the pack, once he speaks its a dropped mic after that. LOL. Reminds me so much of my father, stern, speaks with authority but leads with heart. He is a survivor and a fighter, he's never let anything stop him from being there for his children, our family and church.
I still recall one of our many conversations.....I had stopped by to pick something up, I ring the door bell several times, no answer. I put my ear to the door and I hear his voice. I ring the door bell again, no answer. I turn the doorknob and the door is unlocked. I proceed to enter and I definitely realize it's his voice, he is saying his evening prayer in the living room.
I thought about just turning right back around and leaving, but then thought it would be disrespectful. So I go in and sit with him in the living room as he continues his prayers. A good half hour later (not sure if he prolonged his prayer because he could sense people were there haha), he finally says amen.
Afterwards, he says he's glad we could join him for evening prayer. Then he says something that'll stick with me for a long time..."Seek God during the wee hours of the morning around 1-3am. That is the best time to find alone time with God, sacrifice your sleep Shanna!" In my head I'm thinking that's when I get my best sleep though. But then again that's all the more reasons to give God your best. When we fast we sacrifice our meals to seek Him. So it was befitting to sit in on Matau's evening prayer that night and to have that moment with him to just be my older brother. I do get up during those wee hours to kneel and pray fervently for my husband, my children, my church, my extended family, alone! I always loved that encouragement from Mata'u, to sacrifice your best sleep and find alone time with God. Not corporate prayer, not evening prayer, not family time prayer, not couples prayer but alone time prayer in that secret place with God. You will always find Him when you seek Him.
His children hosted our entire family to dinner to celebrate his birthday. Beautiful memories.
